Boiler Venting
Our boiler wasn't working. At least not reliably. It kept cutting out. So we called a boiler man in.
He looked at it. It needed to be serviced. Also needed a replacement part. Also the heating didn't turn off. I knew about the second problem. That was less urgent. He felt the wiring was wrong and for some reason wasn't able to to fix it. Nor could he recommend someone who could. Nor would he fix the boiler until that was done for some reason.
Got another guy in - one who did electrical work as well - for a second opinion. Seems the first guy had stripped the screw heads for the thermocouple. He put everything back together. Badly. Did suggest getting a new boiler. The old one was getting on a bit, and I really would like a combi boiler so I decided to go for that.
So I went online. Got some quotes. Everyone recommended essentially the same boiler. Quite a range of prices, so I went for the cheapest. Wasn't sure if it included getting rid of the old boiler though. So I used the chat and asked. The response was "Can I call you to discuss the quote". Uhm... okay... And the guy who called me wanted to tell me I wanted a different boiler. THAT WASN'T THE QUESTION I ASKED!!!
Eventually got an installer and an install date.
Nice lad named Connor came round, and got to work ripping out the old boiler. Didn't bring a bucket so he borrowed ours. And then disappeared for several hours getting some materials of some sort. No idea where he went. Wasn't finished on the first day though.
Saturday came. He turned up to finish the job. The problem with having people in is it's really hard to get on with other things. Was really hoping he'd get it done by the afternoon. Spoiler, he didn't. He actually disappeared again for something. The shop was apparently 10 minutes away. Not sure why the round trip took several hours. Still, he came back. Thought perhaps he'd be done by 6pm. I heard him on the phone telling someone he thought he'd be done by 8pm. 8pm rolled round. Still not done. He was finally finished just after 9.
Just some finishing up to do. Some paperwork and stuff. Was getting on for 10 by the time he left.
And he didn't return the bucket!
Oh well. The job is done now. We have hot water whenever we want, at the exact temperature we want, and at a decent pressure! He did do a very nice job of the pipework. Not so good at plastering up the holes but I can fix that one.
