Funnily enough I went through a whole world of pain when renewing mine as well, although in a completely different way. I did it online and didn't need a new photo, but it still took a LONG time with several re-tries required (I had to remember EXACTLY how long I'd lived in each house for the last three years, which is a lot if you're me).
