As part of a whale tracking scheme, Greenpeace decided that they should find a name for one of their whales.   Some 11 000 names were submitted, and the public were invited to choose the ones they like best.

The ideas are often poetic, and apt for a whale - names such as ", meaning "divine power of the ocean" in Polynesian, and "" - the Innuit goddess of the sea were considered.

After an enthusiastic campaign by Reddit and BoingBoing, the leading cnadidate by a huge margin is "Mr. Splashy Pants"!

What a fantastic name for a whale!

I can finally claim to have green credentials again. Rather than relying on the 320 Watts of spotlights (reduced to 240W by using 60W bulbs), I now have an uplighter with energy saver bulbs for general lighting, which takes just 11W. Not all that bright but perfectly adequate.

Really should have done this before.

Environment minister Ben Bradshaw urged direct consumer action and encouraged customers to leave the packaging at the till.  The Guardian tried this.  As it turns out, Tesco came off best.

Wish they were as good at the local Tesco Metro.  Every single time I go there, I'm carrying a sturdy bag that has lasted at least 60 years, and outlasted several owners.  For some reason,  they still seem to think I must want one of their flimsy plastic carrier bags.

I wonder if I can do better though.  My waste so far this week involves some onion skins, the net bag they came in, 2 plastic meat trays, a wrapper for some halloumi cheese, a wrapper for a bar of chocolate, and some banana skins.  Then there's a couple of cans, a cereal box and a few milk cartons that go in the recycling.

In other news: they're demonstrating the Wii in Brighton's shopping centre.  Sure is a cute ickle thing.
