Oi! Photo geeks!

Both of you...

I broke my digital camera this weekend. I need a new one. I'd say I've got aboput 300 quid to spare.

Anyone know what I should avoid?

Dunno what you should avoid, but I think it's worth testing possible choices before buying. I find that some cameras have annoying designs, so it's worth having a go to see if the feel of the thing is comfortable. I take pics using the viewfinder rather than the lcd, and before getting my current camera (aging sony cybershot) I rejected a few that were really uncomfortable to use. Also, it can be worth trying the camera in low light (inside of coat or something) to see how good or crap it is. My first digital camera was a brick, but could pull up an image in dark environments. My sony sucks at that, though current models may be better.

Don't care for mine. Red eye, so annoying. Yes, I know you can wipe it out in the photo fixing page, but still. It also brings out the ugly side of people, don't ever get any flattering pictures of people at all.

About $220.00 USD or a little more. Wish I'd bought another.

[livejournal.com profile] dylan is currently roaming about the Highlands (in the Trossachs, last time I spoke to him), and won't be near a computer again until Friday night at the earliest, but more like next Tuesday. Which is why he's not replying.

That and the fact that I'm not on his friends list.

And since Raygun's a chemical photo geek, I think that means I'm asking in the wrong place.

I've had a Canon PowerShot G1 (but the screen mysteriously died and isn't used anymore.
I now have a Canon PowerShot G5 (a few generations further down the line) and I'm happy with it.
I know of someone with a Nikon Coolpix 5400 or 5700 (similar spec to the G5) and they aren't very happy with it - it doesn't do as much as he wants it to (or something like that).

Other than that, I can't help you much.

Excellent. Just what I needed to know. I was tempted by the Nikon, but will have a look to see what else may be available.

Has the shutter lag improved in your newer camera? This is a dislike of mine. I often miss an action shot because it takes so long to actually click.

Not sure on this. I think the best thing may be to go to a photo shop and ask to try some out.

Alternatively, http://www.dcresource.com/ is a good source of info.
