Notes on Doctor Who and a busy weekend
May. 31st, 2005 01:11 pmIt's always a feature of Bank Holiday weekends that a lot of people want me to do things at the same time. Hence a lognish update. It's also a feature that a lot of people I want to see are elsewhere. It would have been longer
There was a MUD I used many years ago. I now connect on average once every few months, but still attend the mudmeets. It's rare that I see this lot, and most of them are old friends from university, so its nice to see them. The Montagu Pyke is a perfectly adeuqate large pub with no annoying music and decent enough beer. It's also near Leicester Square, which is useful because I still had to buy C3P0 a birthday present. I was tempted by The Mind Robber (Patrick Troughton Doctor Who episode), but for some reason went for The Three Doctors instead. Madness is not a big Sci-fi fan, so usually I talk about other stuff with her. This may come as a surprise to people who are not aware that I can talk about other subjects. She was totally up to speed on who's who and what's what in New DW.
Went home. Collapsed in a drunker stupor. Woke up. Watched Doctor Who. Went to Bristol. Chatted to C3P0. About Doctor Who, suprisingly enough. He toldme he'd recently watched the Mind Robber. I think I chose the right DVD. He pointed out an interesting thing about how much more intelligent today's TV audiences are. It takes about 20 seconds to introduce the relationship between Rose, and Ricky, or Micky or whatever his name is, and tell us pretty much everything about her. A few years ago, it would have taken a lot longer, or the extra characters might not even have existed. Villians are a lot less one dimensional now. Backstory and plot continuity are a lot more important.
It was also nice that they had an openly bisexual character. I think the last dance should have been with Captain Jack and the Doctor.
Party was good. Food wasn't as exciting as it usually was. He only spent a day making food rather than the usual 2-3 days.
And then I came home. And my radio stopped working. Or rather stopped not working. Rather annoyingly, the radio refused to turn off and my steering wheel controls stopped operating it.
I got held up by a crash on the opposite sode of the road. "Rubbernecking" they call it. But there were no traffic announcments mentioning a crash, and no news report. I suspect a cover up.
Criterion should have contacted me by the end of last week. They didn't so I called them. Voicemail systems are always distracting when you just have to say your name, and the system fills in the rest of the message. It's even more annoying when the recording has a totally different accent. And then it said I should press pound when I finish my message. My phone doesn't have a pound symbol on it, so I pressed hash, and that seemed to work. Then is asked for a priority. I don't care!!! Hopefully the HR person will get back to me soon.
I did get a call from SN Systems offering me an interview. So it looks like I'll be visiting Bristol again next week. Timing could have been better.
