So, have switched from Livejournal to Dreamwidth. Not sure I'm all that happy about it. Feel I've been pushed away by the Kremlin. And I was never all that convinced about the drama that cause DW to happen in the first place.

Importing was a relatively painless task, although it did take a while to get round to admitting it failed and letting me retry when I put in the wrong username.

Still, this is me. Feel free to add me as a fiend.

Looking back at some of my entries, and don't have a clue what I was trying to say at some points.  I really need to proofread.

Platypuses:

They're just so delightfully weird.  Egg laying mammals with a duck's bill!?  Who came up with that one?

Amber Benson:

Amber is lovely.  At cons, she chats to the fans, is a lot of fun, and generally really makes sure she never lets anyone down.

Anecdote 1: I was at a convention.  It was horribly overbooked and there wasn't enough time for everyone to get an autograph.  The exception to this being Amber.  She stayed as late as possible so that everyone could see her
Anecdote 2: Another signing - she had to leave early because she was ill.  Someone called the copany organising it to see if he could stillg et an autographed photo from them.  They said "sure, by the way, she's here.  Would you like to talk to her?"

And she giggled lots!

And has a great singing voice.

Rats:

I love rats.  They're cool!  I've always had a fondness for intelligent animals.  Rats are really smart.  Give a rat a button that dispenses food every fourth press and they'll press the button four times.  Give them simple puzzles and they'll solve them.  They even seem to enjoy solving puzzles for their own sake.  Apparently they make great pets.  They're quite social creatures and even in the wild they don't have a fear of humans.  Don't have one.  Not allowed to keep pets in rented accommodation.  They are cool though.

Red hair:

Just something I find physically attractive.  It's slightly unusual and I've always liked that.

World Domination:

Hasn't everyone felt they could do a better job than these idiots in charge?  Yes, I want to be the benevolent dictator!

But there's also the interesting mental challenge - how would you become the dictator?  You need to convince enough people that you are their rightful ruler and also that they're fairly happy about this situation.  War's no good.  It puts peoples backs up and they feel like they've been conquered so will set up resistance movements.  What you actually need to do is rig every single election in every single country.  this could take some time.

Anyone want to ask me about another?

I seem to have various things to post about...

Convention report.
Convention feedback (actually that will go to the orbital mailing list).
Fan/commercial con musing.
Generational confusion.
Ashes to Ashes.
Delia vs. Nigella.

Thought of something else in the car.  Then forgot about it.

I'll get round to it.

First I need sleep!
luckykaa: (Default)
Yeah. I'm bored.

Wondering whether a few of my userpics are kinda obscure or if I'm just underestimating you guys.

So, what's what? )
luckykaa: (Default)
Okay.  There's an LJ comm for firefly knitters - [profile] bigdamnknitters.  Seems to be quite specific.  I wonder how specific a community you could get.

Suggestions?
luckykaa: (Default)
For completeness I've discovered another con write-up I did on another site.  Thought I'd add that to LJ.  So here it is.
luckykaa: (Brighton)
So, why is there no LJ community for geeks in Brighton?  It's not like the city is short of them.

I'll have to create one.  What shall I call it?  Brighton_Geeks? or is there something more imaginative I could go for?

Okay.  I have now created [profile] brighton_geeks, and already, somebody (i.e. me) is using it to pimp an event.  For idly chatting and for promoting things.  General geekery.   For chat about anything really.

No idea if it's going to be a success.  So far it has 1 member.
luckykaa: (Default)
I wanted to complain about that.

I thought I'd post to LJ.  Oh.  I couldn't

I wanted to complain about that.

I thought I'd post to LJ...
luckykaa: (Default)
So the latest LJ Drama has come and gone.

Here's a summary of events

And since then LJ have realised that their users tend to get a bit upset over this, and upset users are problematic, so they relented an reviewed journals.
My thoughts )
luckykaa: (Default)
And by often, I mean once or twice...

Why luckykaa?

And like many of these questions, the answer is exceedingly dull.

I normally use squigs. Luckykaa is just a back up name. I needed a username on a forum. Squigs was taken, so I picked Lucky Kaa as an arbitrary character from the book I was reading - Startide rising by David Brin.

The name squigs is from usenet. I needed a signature, and as a placeholder used the unix-y ~neil/ People started calling me squigly neil slash, then Squigly Neil. Then Squigs Neil. It seemed to fit.

So now you know.

Since the character of luckykaa a genetically engineered dolphin, it makes #6 from this list rather bizarre.

I just received 3 emails from mid november telling me people have replied to my posts. Perhaps LJ should swithc to postal mail notifications.

Funny isn't it. How when I spend a long time between entires I seem to have nothing to say. Has nothing happened?

Well, no... Not really.

I've had a week off work. I was looking forward to having the place to myself. Sadly, I wasn't in on Monday, Flatmate was ill and so in on Tuesday and Wedensday, other flatmate was ill on Thursday and Friday, and third flatmate is at home doing his dissertation. Bloody students.

I spent a lot of this time waiting for passports and getting my own game engine to behave. After spending way too long trying to work out where a ray hits a landscape (Basic operation is easy. Optimisation is hard), I've finally got all the collisions detection I ever expect to need working. So it's time for a hiatus while I contemplate my next move.

My passport arrived on Tuesday. While I was in. Seems the delivery guy didn't want to disturb me though, so didn't knock too loud. Wednesday it was actually delivered.

I also have a nice shiny new credit card, 0% interest free credit and a £2400 limit. I really should buy something with this. My computer needs an upgrade. Perhaps I could buy a laptop or one of those cute little Mac minis, but really a new main PC appeals. I just need to decide what to buy.

Those shuttle cases are rather tasty, but a new motherboard and processor is a much cheaper option and I can always buy the case at a later date. So I think I'll probably be looking at a AMD 3200. Rather annoyingly, the less you pay for a CPU, the better the price/performance ratio. So on that basis, the slowest chip is the best. Also I'm a bit concerned about XP's activation complaining, although I'm told that it shouldn't be a problem. So I guess the bits I should buy are an AMD Athlon (who the hell comes up with these crappy names?) a reasonable quality motherboard and a gig of RAM. Now I just need to find a justification to buy it. It's not like I'm a big gamer after all.

Ooops

Hell, that totally sucked on IE. How was I to know that height=100% doesn't work in a table cell in IE? Okay, fixed now.

I'm feeling kind of mellow, and relaxed. Red wine, Roast beef and Sky movies will do that to a guy.

Decided I might as well start my very own LJ. I had to choose a user name. There are far too many already taken. All my favourites have gone. I might have to dredge through my obscure SciFi knowledge. I think David Brin has some good names, and I rather like dolphins. The alternative is a dragon like name. I am a dragon after all. Born 1976. How about a star fleet reference. Nope. Shiro's gone.

In case you're wondering, and haven't already guessed, I'm writing this before I've actually created an account. You already know what I chose. Wish you could tell me.

Ah well. Bored now. Can't be bothered to look up more names. David Brin has it.

And this it my first diary entry. always felt it's best to make the first entry a little bit plain. People who wish to know me will learn who I am through later diaries. Still, I feel we need a marker for the first diary. This can be it. i wonder if I can backdate stuff. I have some great diaries my holiday.
