Min-con report

Friday
Arrived having detoured by Woking and Reading to pick up [profile] tinkerbell1980 and [profile] lemming_man (since I felt like corrupting one of my friends).  Pleasant enough drive apart from overturned lorry causing tailbacks.  Damn fool.  Couldn't he have found a more convenient place to fall over?  Still.  Had CDs.  Meant to bring more.  Was a little disorganised this time, but Bill Bailey kept us amused.

We got there and slipped into "convention time".  Convention time is that time that applies to conventions, and stops between, so people meet up and carry on as though they only met the previous day.  I met lots of friends.

I like Fan cons.  They really do encourage people to join in.

I feel I should have registered for a guild.  Looks like fun.  Trouble is I'm always a little dazed and confused on arrival at a con.  As it happens, so were the checkin staff at this stage.  Not a good time to try a new booking system.  So, anyway - saw opening ceremony, was amused.  Drank and was merry.  Met lots of friends.  Listened to Terry reading a bedtime story from his new book.  All was good.  All was fun.  I can't be bothered standing up for too long and was feeling way too knurd, so disappeared to the bar.

Saturday

Lots and lots of fun events.  Joined in with the UU challenge, and learned that while I have read all the books, many of them several times, other people seem to have comitted them to memory.  The only answer I managed was what does the dwarf phrase "T'dr'duzk b'hzg t't" mean?   Saw the Maskerade.  I like the maskerade, but I'm way too much of a fidget for sitting around for that long.  Perhaps I should volunteer to do backstage stuff next time I'm at a con.  Can still get to see most of it, and I'd get to move around.  Anyway - the entries were all very good.  [profile] tinkerbell1980 did her stage thing, and was very good.  A true drama queen in every sense of the word.

Tried the vampire on holiday costume.  Decided it wasn't really working, so dropped the cloak and fangs and decided to be Twoflower instead.  Decided to hunt for some more beer.  Danced a little.  Forgot to sleep that night.  I think it counted as tomorrow by the time I hit my bed.

Sunday

Early to rise, late to bed, make a man wish he was dead.  But I can't miss breakast.  The concept is just alien to me.  And anyway - I wanted to be up in time to see the thing about Sky's Hogfather movie this Christmas.  I got me a tooth.  They had many teeth.  I lined some up to make a complete row.  I disappeared and arrived some time later to find another 2 rows of teeth.  Huzzah!

Isn't the pool nice after a hard day and night drinking.

Fortunately there was nothing essential to see, but many things that were worth seeing.  It's all blurring into one big mix though.  Next time I promise to take notes.

Monday

More events.  Walk the walk.  Uhmmm a few others.  Tiiiiireeed now...  It was a day of hanging around and watching what seemed interesting.

Thoughts for future conventions:

Select a time to go to bed.
Sleep.
Do drink too much alcohol.
Spend more time preparing.
Spend more time on a costume.  I can sort of use a sewing machine these days, so I probably should.[1]
Get involved.  Volunteer for stuff[2]
Leave for home on the Tuesday.  Take advantage of the dead dog party.
Start writing a list of what to bring.

[1]Any suggestions?  Next convention is Redemption, which means I have rather a lot of choice.  I might ressurect the captain proton outfit.  I think I'd have to do the whole deal in black and white though.  How do I colour a (possibly synthetic) brown leather jacket grey?
[2]Actually, I'm not sure what I could get involved with at Redemption aside from some of the general helping out type stuff.  I don't have any particular specialised domain knowledge or reason for being on any panels.
