Sporty little motor. Pondering the MR2
Jan. 4th, 2014 05:12 pmI've been hankering after a sporty roadster for a while. Recently I've been considering a Toyota MR2. Can get an old one (12 years) for a couple of thousand quid.Trouble is, such bargains are few and far between. Found a decent one in Bracknell. Not too far.
So we get there. There were customers swarming over the particular car I was after. Decided to browse a little until they went away. Didn't want to seem too keen on it because the other people would snap it up immediately if they thought there was competition. However! There was a second car very similar. No tax, and missing front number plate (need to find out about that), but was given the keys to look at it. Engine seemed to work. Took a while to find the front hood opening. Essentially no luggage space. MG-TF has a bit of room behind the engine but the Toyota MR2 has no space there at all. Just a tiny little it of space behind the spare wheel in the front. No idea what I was looking for but the lady looking at the other similar one gave me a couple of pointers.
Anyway, asked for a test drive. Dealer gave me the keys and told me to take it for a spin. Took a while finding the clutch bite point, but once I was moving, wow! This thing can shift! I'd driven up in my mum's roller skate (Daihatsu Copen) up there. Really not the same! Never driven with anything like that much power before! Not driven a rear wheel drive either. It was like a husky! Eager to go, and off at the slightest touch. So I zipped around, went down a random road and had to turn around because it turned into a lake half way along. Zipped back the other way, and drove around Bracknell a bit. Fun to drive.
So issues are luggage space, and a certain level of uncertainty over registration and MOT. Plus points are SO MUCH FUN!!!!
Might get myself one of these. Not sure whether I'll get this particular one though.
