To the batmobile!
May. 15th, 2019 07:53 pmPoor Harrison had been a poorly car for a while. The nasty loud clatter at low revs was always a little worrying. The way the car shook between 65 and 70mph was a little disconcerting as well. I think though, that after the handbrake went weird, and the rear tyres seemed bald, and given that we needed a new brake light, and the fact that one of the panels was held on with gaffer tape it was probably time to buy a new car.
I quite liked to the look of a Mercedes A class. There was one for sale. Pretty good price. So we booked a viewing after work. After struggling through Manchester city centre, and finding the place, we found that the sales staff weren't there. A friendly helpful mechanic called them up and it turned out that the car had been sold. Well, thanks a bundle! To be honest we probably didn't want the car anyway. It was a bit small and the electric seat adjusters were sloooow.
The next day we had a look at another car. This one seemed more promising. We both liked it and after a short tea break, where we discussed pros and cons, we went back and bought it. This time I remembered to check the MOT certificate.
It's black and has 4 seats, so that ticks Flick's desire and must-have. It's a convertible and has reasonable boot space, so that ticks two of my boxes. Named it Batsy (short for Batmobile). Drove home with the roof down. Got caught in the rain. This is a downside of a convertible. On the plus side, the weather has been lovely since. We've had a lot of fun driving places and chilling out.
Was amazed to find that the CD changer still works! Also pleased that it is a lot more manoeuvrable than a Ford Mondeo.
Alas, this did mean saying goodbye to Harrison. We called up a scrap merchant. He took it away to the farm. I was sad to say goodbye. He was a rustbucket that kept breaking but he was our rustbucket!
