Feast day has arrived! Huzzah
Sep. 30th, 2023 03:14 pmWe ventured forth to Coombe Abbey for a Banquet!
Flickums bought this for me as a replacement Christmas present, after the previous attempt at a Virgin Experience failed dismally.
So Combe Abbey - a genuine 12th century abbey, now convertyed to a hotel. But of course, they make sure to keep as much of the a bey character as possible. So there's a medieval check-in desk, and themed rooms - naturally modernised somewhat - it's a high end hotel after all. We had a rather comfy room with a 4 poster bed, a view of the lake and a lovely large bathroom at the top of a flight of somewhat precarious steps.
But this wasn't why we were there! We were there for a banquet!

flickums had a very Game-of-thrones-esque Red and gold dress, and I was the man in black - except for my crimson cloak. We certainly looked the part for 80's fantasy villains.
We arrived at the tavern - presented with sparkling mead (Mead and Prosecco) or for the non drinkers the juice - that the serving wenches told us was from the far off land of or-ange, and were pleased to find we're not the only people in costume. We immediately started to chat to the other cosplayers. Nice bunch. Nice thing about costuming is that it's a ready made conversation starter. Would have been a shame no to dress up. The setting was mid 16th century, but costumes seemed to cover several centuries either side. All good fun - this isn't exactly the sort of event where we send in the authenticity police.
Feast was delicious! Entertainers were a lot of fun. Some bawdy songs that weren't all that in period but still a lot of fun. We did a lof of huzzah-ing!
And they supplied wine and beer and mead!
Flickums skipped the disco. I thought I'd make a passing visit but it's not really my sort of thing.
I think I drank a bit too much! Did not sleep well.
Drive home was frustrating. Lots of traffic. Satnav tried to get me around it but traffic information was far from perfect. But shouldn't let that mar a fun previous evening! It was good fun and we really ought to do soemthing similar in the future! Or the past.
