I went to the Serenity LARP.  For various reasons, I was crewing.

God that was fun.

Welcome to St. Albans.  A gorramn cold piece of rock where we sell blocks of "Block".   The Black Rock with a thousand and one uses (St. Albans was the snowy planet in "The Message".  The weather in Macclesfield was appropriate).

So, I'd made my preference clear that  I prefer the lightweight one shot roles, but since one of the organisers likes his in-jokes, I was immediately co-opted into playing Hank Shadow* Cranshaw.  Which was fine.  No problem playing that and it lets me get out and chat to characters a little.  Got to wear a damn fine waistcoat and my new hat. And put on a bad American accent.  Have decided that accessorizing is the way to go when playing different characters.  When you wear a shiny green and yellow waistcoat and a hat, then they become the character.

*Can't have an NPC called "Shadow".  It's way too cool a name.

Other roles - A drugged up hoodie miner (Part of the plot was we had this drug called "Pony".  these guys were there to make it clear that they had a drug problem), a random redshirt cannon fodder guy, a random bandit, a con man trying masquerading as a highly respectable fellow. (The Simon Tam glasses came in useful there), another drug crazed miner who had a shotgun and was holding people hostage and making random demands.  The players who dealt with him were ever so sweet - tricking him into taking some strong sedatives when they could easily have just charged at him and killed the guy.  Also learned to come up with a name before someone asks.  The same guy became an alarm clock the next morning, shouting at people and demanding some drugs.  Unexpectedly he came back to base with some drugs.

There were a good lot of players.  One guy had taken the "mute" flaw.  He didn't say a word all event apart from a little out-of-character stuff.  He also had a really cool costume.  Actually there were several cool costumes

Critiqued another player's business cards (not in front of him - after I got back).  They were a bit cheap and made of paper.  My personal cards are much better!  I gave away a couple of "will geek for hugs" cards and got hugs as a result.  I had too much soup for myself so I left half of it with a "Free soup" note.  Still, nobody touched it.  Hope people recognised the reference.

The players stirred up a workers revolution.  Always fun...  They also mugged a sweet little old widow, picked up the hints we sent their way about shaft 13, solved the CSI murder plot, and encouraged our master of ceremonies, as well as three young ladies to run away to the circus, much to the dismay of one of them...  People seemed to enjoy the hicks' lantern festival, where we had an ugly pageant, frog races, goose juggling (outside only), and various other entertainments.

One character got arrested.  And was fired by her captain as a result.  Then later beaten up by the Alliance.  really not her day.

There were a few reavers kicking about and getting extremely cold

Lots of in-character alcohol.  The general rule is that you should not have common branded goods (e.g. Coke and Budweiser), but it looks like someone had decided to remove the label from a bottle of Badger Bitter.  That's just plain wrong.  If anything is LARP appropriate for this it's Badger!

Other general thoughts:
  • I seem to have a lot of useful kit for this sort of thing.  Which is good.  Finding good clothes in the general kit pile isn't always easy.
  • Really need to learnt to think on my feet a lot more.
  • Firefights are pretty damn hectic.  Even if they're only make believe.  Taking cover, checking where everyone is and shooting back is a lot to keep track of.
  • Would rather like to be a player but the system seems more geared to groups of players than individuals.  If I can get a crew together I shall.  Part of my problem is I want to be my entire crew just because there are so many outfits and characters traits I want to use.
  • Wish I'd brought those thick woolly socks [personal profile] tictactoepony made for me.
  • Will really have to upload the photos I took.  This writeup needs illustration.
