Can almost hear the intake of breath

My parents' computer is Blue-screening. 

They rang up the repair guy and he old them it might be a virus... 

Pretty certain viruses don't do that. 

Anyone have any thoughts on how to go about diagnosing this?

If it's XP, it's possible.

Take careful note of the messages and numbers on the blue screen then spend ages researching it on the Internet. It does work but it's tedious...

It is possible that a virus could trigger it by scragging some system files, but I've not run across it before. I usually associate BSODs with hardware faults.

I've no idea, I could never fix my Win NT pc and that BSOD daily.
