The convenience of flying.

Eurostar isn't quite as efficient as I feel it should be.  While it does get from London to Brussels in 2 hours, there's also the need to check in 30 minutes early, and the hourly service means I actually have to get there 80 minutes early. 

If I had the option, I'd fly, but Heathrow is harder to get to than St Pancras.  I would go from Gatwick, but the flights suggested by cheap flight websites don't seem all that practical.  I could take the Lufthansa flight LH897. That gets me to Frankfurt in 1 hour 40 minutes.  Then I just have 5 hours to kill at the airport before getting on a flight to Brussels. A short trip on the train and I'm in the city centre.  For just a little over £1000, BA will send me there in less than 9 hours, via Manchester,and Air Baltic will get me there via Riga.

So, train it is. 

Sometimes I really wish the UK would sign up to Schengen.  Iceland has.  Even Switzerland has, and they're not exactly known for open borders.  Not sure why the UK is so paranoid about this. There's nothing we can do to keep the French out any more.

Oh yes, I remember when Czech Rep signed up to that! Made popping over the boarder much easier when I was on field work :)
