Ghouls and Goblins

luckykaaBit of a delayed update. We've been a bit busy flying home.
We had a late flight so that gives us an extra day. Flickums wanted to get her inner ghoul out and do a death and funerals ritual tour.
Our driver's name was Dwipa. He had a wealth of knowledge about Hinduism as practiced in Indonesia (there are differences between this and Indian practices). First stop was Kehen temple. It was unusually crowded with several bus loads of students. They left en masse shortly after we arrived, and after a short musical interlude with the horns things were quiet. Our guide relly knew hois stuff.
Next stop was the cemetery. This involved a boat trip across the lake. Flickums whacked her head on the boat.This was pretty bizarre. Corpses are kept in bamboo cages, and when a new one arrives, the oldest is removed and the new one put in place. The bodies are just left to decompose naturally. Skulls are kept in a tidy row at the side of the cemetary.
Last stop was the garden where they put placentas of newborns.They wash them, put them inside cononut husks and hang them from a tree. This apparently will protect the child from misfortune. Flickums was feeling a bit poorly, but our guide was very attentive and made sure she was okay. Not 100% sure what he problem was but might be something she ate. Oddly I have similar symptoms but less so a day and a half later. That last couple of hours home was decidedly uncomforable.
And that pretty much ended our tour. Final meal at a very nice restaurant overlooking a valley, then back to the hotel. Turns out we really overpaid getting a taxi to the hotel a the start of the trip.
Managed to find just about enough stuff at the airport to spend most of my remaining rupiah. Bali Airport ios hot and stickiy though. A lot of Balinese buildings don't really have a threshold as such so they're a roof over an out door building. Decided to spend time in the lounge - which annoyingly had no shower but at least had air-con.
Finally home where we've had a chance to bathe, shower and collapse.
