Well, it's that time of year again. The way I see it, it's daft to make new years resolutions in the middle of winter when it's cold, dark and depressing and there's no way of being motivated to do anything. So I wait a bit.

It's also a waste of time to try to be who you feel you should want to be rather than what you want to achieve. No dieting or excercise for me. It's just a time to take stock of where I am and what I want.

A few years ago, I listed what I wanted, and came up with:
  1. Get a new job.
  2. Find a new place to live.
  3. Find something to do in the evenings.
  4. Make some friends.
  5. Find a girlfriend.
Which was reasonably successful.  I managed #3 and #4 reasonably quickly once I put my mind to it.  After a year and a half I managed #1 and #2 which is nice but #3 was pretty much London based.  And moving makes #4 an issue again.  #5 was a low self esteem thing at the time.  I've got over that and I'll just let things happen there.

So that means I have two aims:
  1. Find a hobby
  2. Make some local friends.
Clearly, #1 can lead to #2.  But I can't help feeling all the hobbies I'm drawn to are a little geeky.  On the other hand I rather want to meet some geeky people.  And something that's not toally male dominated would be nice.

Good question. See above reply to Emmzi.

I like geeks. I get on with geeks. It's just the usualy geek activities like video games, board game, sci-fi type stuff - while rather fun - does tend to attract a rather too nerdy type. They just aren't usually interested in things outside their narrow field.

So I guewss I just want to avoid nerds rather than geeks.

I'd stop wishing and throw yourself into internet dating :-)

What's the worst that could happen?

I already do... Or at least I've given Gaspodia permission to try to set me up with any of her geeky friends.

Thanks for the advice. I have sorta. Well, dabbled rather than thrown. The worst that could happen is I'm too slow and miss my chance... Happens way too often, but I'm working on it:)

But while it would be nice to have someone, really I just want to find some new friends.

Roleplaying of some sort is definitely the answer.

Example: http://dnd.meetup.com/779 the London D&D group I run. We're a huge hogdepodge mix of all sorts of people, and they all have their tales to tell, and interests to share.

You'd be surprised who's round the gaming table with you.
