Hunting for new friends in meatspace
Jun. 10th, 2003 01:32 pmI've decided I spend way too much time online. I'm cutting back severely. I'm sure you will apreciate the irony of my writing about this in an online journal. But that doesn't count. Most of the people who read this, I actually know. MSN and ICQ stay connected for much the same reason, but I've decided to mostly abandon usenet for the time being, and general random chat to stranger places.
The fact is, I really do need to get out more and meet real people. You can meet people online, and it works to an extent, but they always remain on the opposite side of a glass screen. I need to get out, find real people I can share a drink with. Find some clubs and societies and stuff.
I wish I could learn how to talk to random people, and when it's socially advisable to do so. Shyness is a serious barrier to meeting people. I had a look at Nosferatu night at Pages Bar, hoping there might be a slightly convention like atmosphere where everyone can talk to anyone (it's a sci-fi themed bar after all), but it seemed not to be the case. Or maybe it was. Trouble with being a geek - I can never tell what the social conventions are.
Maybe I should have a look at the London Anime club. Hopefully Anime is less factiuonalised than general Sci-Fi, or even worse - Doctor Who.
To contradict an earlier point - I'm meeting someone I met online tomorrow. Seems a sweet girl. Anyone who likes Invdader Zim is in my mind a good person to get to know.
raygungothic's obsession wth bookbinding makes me feel I should take up some sort of hobby. I have a kitchen to myself, so I could do something along the lines of mead making. I feel it's nice to have a constructive hobby. It would be nice if I was musically inclined, but I'm not.
Other news: French flatmate has now moved out. This is disappointing for various reasons:
1. I was getting to know her and we were becoming friends. A shared appreciation for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and various other Cult TV shows helped.
2. Most of the kitchen utensils moved out with her. So did the iron. Ah well. Never use it anyway.
The other flatmate (who wanted to get rid of her) is also considering leaving. Apparently he can earn twice as much doing the same job in New York.
