Short changed - whining about work
Sep. 11th, 2003 11:15 pmAfter having worked my socks off, doing an extra 2 days as well as overtime just about every night last week, just to get this milestone in on time, I figure that I deserve an extra day off. So, I wrote a nice email justifying that we should get a day off. What do I get? Tomorrow afternoon off. I'm feeling a little bit cheated here. Gave up two days, and a weeks' worth of evenings, and I get half a day back! Looks like I'm never going to work at a weekend for this company again.
The result is that I'm generally looking at other jobs. Not too aggressively right now. The deadline's over. There's not going to be another week like that for a while. I think it's time to see if I can move back to Bristol.
Overtime is never a good idea anyway. The later you work, the slower you work, the longer you spend correcting glitches. Lack of sleep and lack of enthusiasm to step through the program with a debugger means these bugs crop up. Note to self: read The Mythical Man Month. Must try and find that sometime. and the Emperor's New Mind. Hell, I need some Pop-Sci. Maybe I should get that Lovelock book as well. Tangents are great aren't they.
But these bugs - I spent ages looking at one particular bug. The reason it took so long was not that it was a particularly tricky problem, but that I couldn't work out what the change I made to cause this bug actually solved in the first place. Whatever it was, it was no longer an issue. Grr... Anyway, after fixing that bug, another two bugs crop up. It was okay for Heracles. He had help from Iolaus. Maybe this is the wrong legend. I'm actually Sisyphus.
So, what do I want to do? 3D-labs is after driver developers. Do I want to work for 3D chips again? I wasn't too happy before, but that was more because I really didn't understand the hardware dev side of things. This would be a pure software position, and I can quite happily poke registers to my heart's content.
