Conventional weekends
Dec. 2nd, 2003 02:49 pmI went to Starfury Senior partners Buffy convention this weekend.
Decided that it shouldn't take that long to get to Heathrow since I'm already in London. It only took an hour and a half. Sigh. I hate driving in London. It's soo irritatingly slow. Anyway, after getting lost once or twice, I managed to find the way to the hotel. I've been there before, but now it's a Thistle, and the quality has gone way down. And they charge guests for parking.
And the bar is stupidly expensive. But that's always the case in hotels.
Plus side - I did have one of these:

Anyway, got there later than I wanted, so failed to see the season 5 start of Angel. Thought I'd wait for the party. The theme was law and order. Didn't think of costumes though. Shame really. Could have just worn my suit and been a hotshot lawyer. I decided I'd wear my denim shirt and pin a number to the front. There you go. Instant prisoner. Also went for a contrasting eye colour look just to weird people out.
Had fun at the party. Umm. Not a lot to say there. Went to bed far too late. Woke up at the wrong time. Missed the repeats of those Angel episodes again, but managed to get to breakfast. Since I'm broke, I wanted to make sure I had my money's worth, and didn't need to have lunch. They have really tiny plates for breakfast. It makes it very unstable when you pile it up.
Decided that since there was another hour or so until stuff started, I'd drive to West Drayton and see if I could find a costume for the following night's Wild West themed party. i.e. a hat. I wanted one for a perfectly legitimate and very shallow reason - Chicks love to steal hats. Couldn't find one though. I did find a lot of fast food places which were useful later.
So, I went to some of the guest tlaks. Guests were Stephanie Romanov (evil lawyer - Lilah Morgan), Christian Kane (evil lawyer - Lindsey McDonald), Thomas Burr (evil lawyer in a few episodes of season 1) Neil Roberts (A villian for a few episodes in season 1 of Charmed), and Steve Carlson ( The other half of Christian's band - 'Kane'). The guests were mostly male. This was good because it meant that the fans there were mostly female.
Neil Roberts was hilarious. He was at the last one I went to. Many of the stories were the same, like the time when his character was attacked by a panther. For shots of him, they used a stuffed panther. Still attached to its plinth. Still, very funny. Thomas Burr spoke about acting. Then Stephanie Romanov and Christian Kane were up together. Spoke about various bits and pieces. They were good as a team. Everyone liked Neil Ropberts though. Last time he was at a convention, was just after Once More with feeling had aired, so everyone was asked if they could sing. He said he only did karaoke where he usually chose The Monster Munch or Mandy. He didn't realise that Mandy was an important song in Angel. We all asked him to sing Mandy. It's now become a tradition that he has to sing it at any convention.
Took advantage of the break to disappear again to Toys 'R' Us to see if I could get a hat there. Nope. That is such a rubbish shop. They never seem to sell anything. Managed to find a Tescos though, so I picked up a jug of Cider, and some lemon bonbons.
Went to the Burger king I'd headed past earlier. Found out there was a shop right next door that would have sold me that hat except it was now closed. I should have looked left when I went right. Ah well. Got a burger and some lemon bonbons.
Before the evening party, we had Kane perform live.
Spent most of the party outside the main hall chatting to people. Met some Jedi chefs. - Something about an in-joke from a previous convention where people complained about the food. They started lightsaber fighting in the car park. Christian Kane joined in, and tried to demonstrate stage fighting. But this was not the chef he was looking for. He got assistance from Stephanie, and gave us a brief demonstration of their swordfighting prowess
. Also met a mildly depressed goth, and her frighteningly perky friend. Of course, she had met Amber Benson. That seems to make most people happy.
Sunday, we had talks from the same people again. More silly stories from everyone. Ummm..
Closing cermony ended in the traditional way (Mandy Karaoke).
Final party. Lots of cool Pirate costumes.
Chatted to more people.
Took more photos.
Went home.
