I've been reading Three Men in a Boat. This is a fantastic book, full of stories about battles with pineapple, and other arduous tasks. Plus the edition I'm reading has Michael Palin, Tim Curry and Stephen Moore on the front cover. It makes me feel tempted to write this in a rambling way with lots of asides and daft stories. Instead, I decided I'll just use the chapter style for this entry.

So, what have I been doing? Not updating this thing, that's for sure. I visited my brother last weekend though. We watche Jeeper's Creepers and drank lots of beer, and he did a Tarot reading, which seemed to tell me that I was out of work. At least that's one interpretation. Another is that I should don a cape and fight crime. Interesting stuff Tarot. Never been quite sure what to make of it.

My excessively long winded project to create a front end for my C compiler has finally given me a working product. It seems impossible to produce a pretty application using FLTK though. For one thing, the colours clash with my Windows settings since it doesn't seem to want to import them. For another, it insists on implementing its own windows widgets. I can make the menus looks sort of right, and buttons are fine, but there aren't any of those pretty trees and things that are built into windows.

So, I thought wxWindows might be the answer. Much nicer. Integrated with Windows, and full of features. Doesn't seem to have an editor widget though. Grrr... Well, if I ever have free time, maybe I'll add it. Maybe it's too MFCish as well though.

I fianlly got round to seeing what I can do to extract some money from my company since it seemed to be busily refusing to go into liquidation. I went to Citizens advice, and was assisted by an extremely disorganised man trying to organise the queue. Apparently I needed to fill out an IT1 form. According to the ex-employee's mainling list, the company has now gone into liquidation.

And I've been learning Javascript. I ruthlessly copied Claires first Javascript app to make my own nought and crossses game Try it. Actually, I think it could be optimised somewhat. Recursive AI algorithms are tricky to get one's head around.

Had a bash at a Japanese style rolled omelette. Lifting up an omelette using a pair of chopsticks is tricky. Why did I insist on being so authentic? I still have many more countries to try. If only I had the money to spend oningredients. Why do time and money never seem to happen at the same time. Started pondering contracting though. Could solve all these problems.

Maybe I should have a go at one of these Meme's that's going around.

See the lovely wxStyledTextCtrl - for some silly reason it's not part of the default wxWindows classes, but in the "contrib" directory of the wxWindows distribution. See also Scintilla, the original editing component that wxStyledTextCtrl is built around.

Oh yes.

Now I'm just a little annoyed that I was fooling around with fltk. Ah well. No disaster. I'm fairly happy with my text editor.

It is indeed a brilliant book. Three Men on the Bummel is not quite as good, but has its moments and is still worth reading.

BTW, I have more dried bonito flakes than I am likely to use up. Give me a shout if you would like some for your dashi.
