Well, that was cool.

Alternate timeline is a good idea for dealing with discontinuities.

Zacharoi Quinto looks more like Spock than Leonard Nimoy.

Kirk has a fight without getting his shirt ripped.

The stolen car bit at the start seems superfluous.  What was the point of that scene?

"Okay, i need three people.  Kirk, Sulu, and guy in red who we've never seen before"

Kirk seemed way too inexperienced to be Captain.  Even for a meteoric rise.

[livejournal.com profile] invisigoth51 is right.  Warp is fast!

It felt like Star Trek.  Also it didn't.  More like Star Trek 2 than the series.  All good stuff.

Original theme tune makes me so nostalgic.

I'm an incurable Trekkie and I don't even want to be cured.  I don't know what it is about Star Trek, but I know I'm not the only one with this level of devotion.  It's something rare about Star Trek.  Trekkies self identify as Trekkies (or Trekkers).  Most fans of other shows see themselves as science fiction fans, and while they have favourites, there's no exclusivity about it.  Apart from Sherlock Holmesfans (who seem to have pretty much invented hardcore fandom), all other fandoms feel like they're just tryingto emulate Star Trek's success.

The stolen car scene shows that Kirk not only grew up with an asshole for an uncle, instead of his father, and was openly rebellious against him -- to the point of destroying his beloved antique vehicle.

It shows us that he's growing up in a more 'hostile' environment and probably gives an alternate-timeline influenced excuse to play him a little differently.

(And it lets us play some Beastie Boys in a movie you'd least expect to find 'em! :D)

But yeah, everyone's sudden movement in rank and responsibilities was a biiiiit contrived, to say the least, but the fact that I can still enjoy it despite that is great. (Any other movie and that'd be a major bullet-point on why it's ridiculous. ;))
