So those European Parliament elections.

Win for Conservatives.  Being possibly the most right wing person in my friends list I don't have a huge problem with this but I really don't think their policies are best for Europe.  The EPP-ED does have a little too much political oomph but they're not a hugely cohesive group.

UKIP came in second.  Labour apparently suffered because of the expenses scandal.  The Tories should have suffered but their pet newspaper put the boot into Labour first, and they handled it well.

It's odd that this resulted in UKIP doing so well though considering they're far from squeeky clean.  Seems kind of illogical that the vote should swing so far towards UK independence as well, considering if we had adopted the Euro, our economy would probably have been doing a fair bit better.  Honestly, I'm concerned about UKIP.  They're less overtly and far less consistently racist than the BNP, and I genuinely believe that the majority are simply in favour of greater independence from Europe, but they'd do well to get rid of some of their more National Front friendly members.

BNP got a couple of seats.   Partly because of those 120 000 odd people who voted for them, but helped in no small way by those 2 and a half million people in Yorkshire and the Humber and 3 and ahalf million in the North West who couldn't be bothered to vote.

Am quite pleased the Pirate Party got a seat in Sweden.

Also on a vaguely political note - someone in the Metro letters page complaining about big Brother spending £8000 on a chair "in the current economy".  Now, maybe modern economic theory is different, but isn't spending money generally considered a good thing for the economy?

I try to vote... since I've been out of the country every year at election time & they are so shite at sending postal vote forms out in time for them to reach & be returned by anyone not actually sitting at home in front of the television I have no idea if I've had my say or not... If not I hope at least I helped snow them under with late returns of postal forms.
