Costuming

Well, it turns out that Edward scissorhands is a little too far outside of my skillset.  Also requires a lot more scrap leather than I can be bothered with.

I saw the actual movie costume at the Tim Burton exhibition at ACMI when I was in Melbourne.  It was made from a  hotchpotch of different bits of leather.  Decided to have a go myself.  Get some leather jackets,  cut them up, make stuff out of them.  Turns out that you need a hell of a lot of leather to make a single pair of trousers.  Also, not that easy to stitch these bits together or to make a pair of trousers out of them.  I only have another three weekends before the con.  Since I have to make trousers, jacket and scissors in that time, and have no idea how to do any of these,  I think that will be cutting it a bit fine.

Would be nice to make something.

Themes are Superheroes, and robots.

Maybe I could give it another go.  Still requires a Camden raid.  So, what else can I make?  Ideas are hereby solicted.

Seriously - go to a charity shop. I keep seeing leather trousers in them in portslade. Buy a pair that fit, then cut them down and resew other bits on?

For sewing leather what you really need is an awl (ar better a hand sewing punch) and some saddlers needles and linen thread. I have these but unfortunately no free weekends but if you needed to come over in evenings (and I realsie we may be just too far to feasibly do that) you'd be more than welcome to. Unfortunately I'll need to be using them between the weekend of masquerades and massacres (when my deadline for one costume is) and the following weekend (the one before easter) for my next deadline, which is a leather greatcoat, otherweise I'd figure out a way of just lending them to you for the period. If you're desperate I may be able to lend you some of that though...

I do have an awl thread and needles. Although this is very thin soft leather I'm working with, and can be sewn by machine.

Did you ever see [livejournal.com profile] missing_a_chair's Edward Scissorhands costume that [livejournal.com profile] invisigoth51 and [livejournal.com profile] amicu made for him? Basically, he put on a tight long sleeve t-shirt and leggings, and they covered him in black gaffer tape, then put some thrifted black belts around him for the buckley bits. It was very well done, they even (carefully) cut a flap in the front of the trousers that re-sealed with extra tape, so he could relieve himself. I think he had to be cut out of it at the end, but iirc they did it in such a way that it got recycled for a Matrix party a while later.

Can't remember how they did the hands, probably involved cardboard and tinfoil. Do remember his hair being back-combed and hairsprayed, that was hilarious.

Hmm. That's an excellent idea! Think it was a little too gaffer-tape-y but can certainly do something with gaffer and leather.
