For the last year or two, I was having trouble getting to sleep roughly once every other week, but this seemed to be increasing. For the past month this hasn't been a problem.

It may be a coincidence, but that's also the time I ditched an aggressive happy-meatarian (i.e. free range or veggie) lifestyle. I was finding it way too much work to be sure meat was outdoor reared, so was essentially vegetarian. Partly because I found a veggie diet hard, but the possibility that the insomnia may have been diet related was a factor. I had been putting it down to stress, but I wasn't feeling all that stressed.

Would do some experimentation to work out what I might have been missing but that would involve periodically making myself miserable and sleep deprived and I'm actually enjoying this sensation of being able to sleep.

Interesting...
When I switched from veggie to happy-meatarian I got less tired & more energy to the extent it was commented on by a friend I was working with at the time.
More interestng I still seldom get a full nights sleep (but this doesn't seem to change whether I'm on a high meat week or not).

Whether this is a comment on how important it is to choose foods carefully as a veggie (I'm not always great at this) OR if what I read years ago that some blood/body types are better suited to veggie diets than others.... Most likely a bit of both

I would assume you're better at picking a balanced diet than me. I really don't know what I should increase to compensate. I think the sort of food I cook might be a bit of a problem as well. A lot of veggie dishes seem to require long cooking times and I tend not to feel in the mood for cooking until I'm hungry.

First, make sure you're still getting all your vital nutrients.

Secondly, warm milky drink [not coffee!] before bed.

Thirdly, try meditating.

Forthly, if you still have problems, try medication to help you sleep. There's a natural one including valerian and hops available from most health food shops.

Fifthly = still no joy sleeping, go see a doctor.

"First, make sure you're still getting all your vital nutrients."

Right. Pretty certain that was the problem. Meat seems to be adding something I was missing but don't know exactly what.

"Thirdly, try meditating."

I did find sitting in a dark room with my eyes closed until I got bored worked pretty well when I wasn't sleeping. Is that meditation? Seemed to work anyway.
