I got an offer for a credit card from Vanquis. A credit card Company I was not previously aware of.

Their offer is certainly unusual.

49.9% APR And if I'm rally lucky, it may go down to a mere 32.9%! But I can cut my interest rate again annd again! Yeah, I'm not surprised...

All this for just £19 a year!

Alternatively, I can stick to my existing cards at 16% and 13% APR and no annual fee... Granted, I never pay interest anyway, but I'm a little offended that they consider me such a bad credit risk. It appears that this card is targetted at people with a bad credit rating - exactly the people who shouldn't have a credit card.

An open letter in response

Dear Sirs.

I was impressed by your credit card offer.

I would be tempted, but it appears that Fat Vinnie, the great white loan shark offers a considerably better rate of interest. He also offers the convenient extra service of sending round Les and Des personally to collect payments and remind me if I happen to be late. I'm also told that Vinnie can get me special rates on all sorts of consumer goods.

However, if I suddenly lose all mathematical ability and/or sense, I shall certainly consider your offer.

They gave me a pre-paid envelope. I wonder if I should send this letter to them.

They might send Rob and Bob round to show you why 49% APR is better than no APR and no working limbs ;)

+1 on the send it votes. Heck, they'll probably get charged some small amount to have your note delivered to them (if I remember the economics behind those notes correctly), which is also a good thing. Seem to remember hearing of someone who always sent back pre-paid envelopes, loaded down with as much random marketing crap as he could find...

Send them something really, really heavy so they have excess postage to pay.

Unless they are really good they will never know it was you.
