It's another Santorini Sunset
Sep. 3rd, 2023 06:51 pmThe Red Beach is for immediate loading and unloading of sunbathers only. There is no stopping on the white beach.
Not that we visited either. I just like the joke.
Decided that we really ought to see the Akrotiri Archaeological site since we are staying literally up the road from there.
We decided to head down there early before it gets too crowded with the organised tours. There were quite a few groups there already but I think it would get pretty hectic around midday.
So, the site - rather nicely it's covered and air conditioned to preserve the excavation), but it also makes things nice for the visitors.
The ancient Minoan (I think) city was covered by the massive eruption 3600 years ago, and as a result is very well preserved. Apparently they even found frescoes in decent condition. There's enough structure remaining that it's easy to get a very good impression of the shape of buildings and the street layout. Apparently, unlike Pompeii, they were well aware of what was going to happen and seem to have arranged an evacuation. There weren't any buried skeletons discovered, or anything like that.
So, that was that. We had a dip in the pool, and the rest of the day was spent doing things we failed to do previously.
So we went to Akrotiri village, and I finally had that swordfish steak I wanted three days ago. Then we were picked up for the sunset cruise we were meant to go on yesterday. We got a free upgrade to a Catamaran, but were asked not to share that we did. I was actually looking forward to the wooden boat but okay.
After a very long bus ride right to the other side of the island, picking up everyone else along the way, we boarded our boat - Moonlight. First stop was the hot springs again. we were a little too far to really feel the warmth. We sailed around the south-west tip of the island, then to the area around the White Beach and Red Beach - two beaches that are very isolated and reachable only by boat. There is a water taxi service from near the Archaeological site.

flickums . Flickums vowed to feed the fish again.
Once snorkelled, we were fed. Lots of tasty barbecue food, dips and salad. Some particularly tasty mussels! I helped make sure that there was none left. And there were a couple of pieces of bread left over, so we threw it to the fish. They didn't notice at first but after a time got very enthusiastic about attacking it. Flickums was a very happy goblin seeing the splashing from under the sea.
Food eaten we found space at the front of the boat to watch the sun set over the cliffs. It's very pretty. I think it looks nicer setting over the cliffs than over the sea. But after it had fallen behind the cliffs, we moved to see the sun set behind the sea. They played some very suitable music; and led us to speculate on good tracks for sunsets.
Really was nice to see, especially with all the other boats, silhouetted against the setting sun.
Once the sun was down, we made a beeline for the harbour, with Dark Side Of The Moon playing.

Was planning on doing nothing on the last day, but this was a particularly chilled final day so I'm happy.
Thank you flickums for the lovely birthday present!
