Clearly, if I buy a new processor, I also need to buy a new motherboard, and it makes sense to upgrade my RAM. While I'm there I thought I may as well buy a new graphics card. At this stage I started to wonder why I don't just buy a complete new computer. But that's boring. Real geeks build their own machines.

So, I get everything home, and take out the guts of my computer, then manhandle the new board into place. Then find I don't have an ATX 12V supply on my PSU. Looks like I need a new one of them as well. Then I notice that Dell use a tidied up front panel connector with everything stuck to the same plug. This only works with Dell motherboards. Perhaps I'll get a new case too. I could just rewire the front panel but I'm not a huge fan of the Dell case so I can justify upgrading that.

I think one or two components might remain the same.

Took me a while to get all the old components back in again and working properly. Something seems to have gone titsup with my network connection. Most irritating trying to get a network connection back up.

It's a bit disappointing that I have to wait until the shops open again before I can actually get this up and running.

On the plus side, I did run the risk of frying my motherboard by using a Dell PSU on it, so maybe I was lucky. Apparently Dell uses standard PSU conectors these days, but may or may not have done when they made this machine.

These days I just buy all new stuff and try to give the old computer away. It's much easier than ending up with loads of unwanted bits: I have no shortage of those as it is. :-)
