I really need to update more often
Feb. 8th, 2003 11:01 pmThe odd thing is, the longer I wait to update, the less I have to talk about. Only the minutae of my life. Hmmm.... why do I bother writing here at all?
Lets see then - Let's start two weeks ago. Went to the Star Trek thing at Hyde Park. Always nice to meet up with an old friend from University.
The event was entertaining but far too expensive. The whole event seems to be an exercise in parting people from their cash. If you book online, they charge a booking fee, and postage at £1.25. They charge 2 quid for the cloakroom. No idea why they need to heat the place at all. The Millennium Dome was unheated, and managed to stay at a nice temperature. Ah well. It was nice to look at these things.
Then went to see Star Trek 10. Quite good, but it really feels like it's been trimmed to fit into a reasonable time. I wanted to see more Romulan stuff. I feel there was probably a lot more happening there. Instead, we just got a long battle in space. Hmmm... First Contact Tomorrow.
Last weekend, I visited my Brother in Swindon. I'm still dizzy. Fortunately I managed to avoid the Magic Roundabout. Managed to consume lots of food. I had this very nice meal involving Venison, Ostrich, Kangaroo, and Shitake mushrooms at a pub, and the next day I had a nice Mexican meal. All this no doubt reduced my fuel efficiency on the way home quite considerably.
I need to do something. Don't know what though. I want to create something, but writing software all week makes me less inclined to do this at the weekend.
I was rather upset about the Columbia crash. I'm finding media speculation a little tiring too, but not so much as public speculation. "Could it be a terrorist attack"? Well, if the terrorists have aircraft capable of travelling at 18 times the speed of sound, or can penetrate NASA security, then it could be. Why didn't they go to the ISS? Because they didn't have enough fuel. Matching orbits with the ISS wouldn't have been possible. It couldn't have docked either. Columbia didn't have the right docking collar.
Still, it would be nice if NASA take this opportunity to start upgrading their shuttle fleet. Actually, I don't think the orbiters need replacing just yet. Those solid rocket boosters should be replaced by something that can land on auto pilot, and be made ready for launch more easily. Dropping them in the sea on parachutes means they need an expensive recovery operation.
