Serenity Squared
Nov. 22nd, 2005 09:40 amI spent the weekend at the serenity con. And had a lot of fun.
Friday
Gotta love trying to drive out of London on a Friday. Only took about an hour and a half. Most of that was driving the first 10 miles. Perhaps I should have left earlier.
So I got there. Realised I'd forgotten my Jayne hat. And my DVD. And my army bag. Decided I wouldn't turn round just yet.
Met the two con virgins I dragged along. Went to Opening ceremony. Neil Roberts was MCing. Shiney. Neil's a funny guy and has nothing to do with Firefly. He does have a wealth of stories about how people recognise him all the time though. Just never as an actor on telly. So, after a loooong wait, he came on, introduced the Big Damn Heroes (Firefly fandom has it's own jargon), and we all cheered, then they went away and we had a party. Met various people I know from previous cons. Chatted about life, the universe, everything...
The part theme was Bollywood. I have no idea who came up with that idea. Seemed stupid. Alright for the girls, but there's not a lot of scope for the guys.
Next door was the KPMG Grade D event. Seemed rather dull.
Went to bed. Had to wait for a while because I'd offered my floor to a drunken goth, who was very difficult to shift.
Saturday
Woke up. Drove home, picked up DVD, hat and bag, then to Uxbridge to buy a flash, then to Con, and took about the same time for the round trip as the one way journey the day before.
Went to talks. Took photos. Jonathan Woodward was insane, Christina Hendricks was sweet. Generally lots of Q&A. Missed the Morena, Nathan and uhmm.. Jewel talk becuas they jiggled the schedule without telling us. The schedule had no resemblance to actual events.
Skipped the autograph queue in favour of eating.
At the end of the day, we had the fancy dress parade. Usual dithering and lateness. These things do not run to schedule. Unfortunately, they didn't seem to give us anything to keep us occupied. Last time there was lots of video stuff and general filler. Must have ben a different tech crew. These guys weren't particularly audience aware. But eventiually we got as far as the fancy dress parade.
There were some good costumes. The theme was nominally Alan Tudyk films. I was encouraged to put on the tiger ears that
tictactoepony had made me. Other people liked them. They're a good talking point. Wish I'd thought to get some cat contact lenses. I just didn't have any time.
Sunday
Started off with Holy communion. This was from the church of the 11th finger, and involved a mass baptism with whiskey from Jonathan Woodward (who has is the Poop of this church). And he made us all say "bukakke" a lot. Seems Firefly fans don't take religion too seriously.
More talks. Wasn't so interested though. Seen these guests before.
Charity Auction was a lot of fun. People are very easy to whip up into spending far more than things could possibly be worth, at least by showmen like Jonathan and Neil. I can't see any prob being worth several hundred pounds. But it gives these people a lot of happiness so who am I to argue? Besides, I spent 26 quid on a genuine banknote from Serenity.
Got to the autograph queue. That took a long long time. I only wanted two autographs but that included the looong queue for Sean. Unfortunately he was the only regular who hadn't done this before. This menat all the big fans wanted as many items as they could have signed. I just wanted my box set signed.
Went to eat. Missed the other half of the autograph queue. I didn't really care since I already had the autographs from the other two.
Third party was Bond themed. People did dress up rather well for it. A handful of bond girls, various bonds, the odd scientist. Then I actually came up with a costume idea. Shame it was about a week too late. I could have been a persian cat. Ah well... There will be other times.
Next door we had an Indian wedding reception. It seemed like such fun, and the food smelled fantastic. I was tempted to see if I could swap my badge for the righty to gatecrash the wedding.
Pics from the event are here.
It was fun, but I'm getting more and more jaded with these events, and their emphasis on guests. I like to meet other fans. Fans are fun.
Monday
Broke my car. Already talked about that. Ah well. Claimed on the insurance, and wiped out no claims bonus.
