A show I'm enjoying at the moment is Black Butler. An anime series about a demon butler called Sebastian. The butler describes himself as "A Hell of a Butler". It's a good catchphrase and gets the premise across. He says it a lot. A typical exchange, after Sebastian does something impossible is:

"Are you sure you're just a Butler"
"I am one hell of a butler"

A little trivia is relevant here. In the original Japanese though the wordplay is a much more interesting pun. According to this stackExchange post, He says either " aku made shitsuji desu kara", or "akuma de shitsuji desu kara". Both sound the same.

The first means, idiomatically, "I am a butler, through and through, you see".
The second means "I am a butler and a demon, you see"

Both answers work perfectly as a response to "Are you sure you're just a Butler". Knowing this adds a certain something to exchanges like the one above.

It turned out [livejournal.com profile] flickums had never seen the Karate Kid! Naturally I was shocked!

I had never seen Beauty and the Beast. Natually flickums was shocked!

So we had a cultural exchange. We watched both films (over two days - time was not on our side).

I enjoyed it. Loved the animaton style. Not so sure about the songs - seemed a bit old fashioned. The animated furniture was cute.

We had deep fried camberty with it. I also learned that deep fried camambert takes about 15 seconds to cook. Not sure exactly how long. Also it should be served quickly otherwise the cheese leaks out. We did have a few empty wedges that had lost all their cheese.

Need to work out what's next for the cultural exchange. I'm sure I'll find a few other holes in Flick's media experience. For now though, next on the agenda is Free Enterprise. And I'll watch The Little Mermaid. Apparently we're getting the more girly ones out of the way first.

So, quick update while my laundry dries...

Went to Tim Burton Exhibition.  Was probably worth it just for the cute animated short - Vincent. Am tempted to make an Edward Scissorhands costume at some point or a mad hatter one.  Sadly no photos were allowed.

Also had a look at ACMI.  Decent enough movie museum.

Bought a Myki card for the trams.  Similar to Oyster except Oyster works and these are really flaky.

Pub crawl.  Started off with a piss up in a brewery.  Directions were rubbish.  Stops out in the sticks aren't all labelled on the route map.  Brewery directions don't mention stop numbert.  Just the name of an adjacent street.  Eventualy got there.  They did a sampler platter - 4 smallish (third of a pint?) glasses on a wooden board, each with a different beer.  Nice idea.  4 very different beers.

Followed up with the Lambs Go Barrrr.  Bad pub.  Huge selection of bottled beers from around the world.  Chocolate porter was interesting.

Apple/Pear Cider in Mrs. Parma's.  Pub #4 was Penny Blue.  By the time I left there were only 4 of us.  Then there were three.  I'm sure the others went on to the next pub after I left.

Feet are really killing me.  Am going to spend as much of the con as possible sitting down.

Finally saw Up.  It's Pixar.  Therefore must be seen on big screen.  There are rules.

Decent enough.  Sub par for Pixar.  Still fun. It's nice to see that Pixar actually rely on comedy for humour rather than cultural references unlike pretty much any other animated movie.  Rather annoying crying Baby.  Really - who takes a baby and a three year old to see a movie.  Wait for the DVD.

Can't decide whether to go to crew Serenity or not.  I've been feeling really tired recently.  I'm not sure if I'm feeling tired because I'm feeling down or feeling down because I'm feeling tired.  I might feel too tired to enjoy it.  On the other hand I migt end up feeling miserable and lonely if I don't go.

Went to the Wednesday Jive class.  Met a very nice Australian Gal.  Asked her if she wanted to meet for a drink.  Got shot down.

Today's happy thought....

Am actually picking up some Jive moves.  Must be able to do better than that.

Blue Cheese and mushroom pizza!!!!!

I seem to be doing something at work that nobody has ever tried to do before!!!  A real-time Afro!

Programmable shaders have really moved on a lot since I was last doing this stuff.  Cg actually allows you to write programs in a C like language. Seems there are countless examples of procedurally generated hair of all colours and types, including african, but when I want something puffed out a bit, nobody has ever tried it before.  Perhaps I should get this to be really good and actually have created something new and amazing that I can share with the world!  Either that or I'm really stupid and everyone else sees this as 5 minutes work.

Update on me.

I'm still hungry!

A crepe clearly isn't enough to keep me gong until the end of lunchtime.

Mmm.  Kettle chips.

Infinity Foods is a damn fine health food shop.  Shame the queues are so horribly slow.

For some reason last week I was feeling lonely, unloved and miserable.  This week I'm feeling lonely, unloved and reasonably cheerful.  I wonder what changed.

I still have no grill.

I have now booked for Orbital and Redemption and encourage everyone else to do the same.

Keep wanting to buy myself a penis extension new car.  Wondering if I can justify it.

My devious plan to make a very short LEGO animation has run into a problem.  For some reason, two UFO's with various aliens, a Blacktron, a gyrocopter , a couple of aquanauts and a pirate and skeleton refuse to suggest any story to me.
