The usual organisers of the Redemption Music Quiz couldn't make it! I hated the idea of not having the quiz, so I volunteered as tribute! [livejournal.com profile] tlanti agreed to be my incomparable compere, so the quiz was on! Fortunately, we also had Morag - the team's usual scorer - keeping score for us!

A week isn't a lot of time to create a quiz. I need to get the music. I need to trim it, test it and in the case of one round reverse it, slow it down or speed it up (and then pitch shift it back to audibility). Am really pleased I did a last minute check of the questions. Question 9 was completely wrong!

I put on my cat herding ears to get everyone organised. I can't overstate how good the Tech Crew are. They're awesome. "So, I want microphones and I want to be able to play audio from my mp3 player". No problem at all. A bit of tweaking and a sample tune and all was working.
Here's how it went )

If I do this again, will bring chocolates or something to hand out to audience members for getting questions right. Still not sure if throwing the questions to the audience was a good idea. It is good to keep them involved and does mean that there's no need to pick which team to give a shot to.

Glad I did it but I'm more than happy to hand the reins back to Christine and Michael for the next event!

Last pub quiz at Molly Malone's Irish pub. I'll return home before the next one.

It was a fun evening. Struggled in through the cold and wet. A nice glass of Leffe was very comforting. Was immediately accosted by a woman who wanted an extra person on her team. That was nice. It's always nicer to be asked than to have to ask even if people do always say yes.

So nice bunch. Two Dutch women and a Chinese chap. Picture round was about toys. Except one toy was from G.I.Joe and I said Action Force. It's the same thing just a different national branding! We can 6th in the end, out of 11. I seem to keep being quite useful in the music round despite having no idea abut anything released after 1987. So won a bottle of Rosé. It was rubbish.

To make the night a little more curious - the other day I was showing prospective tenants around the flat. One of them was at the quiz and said "hi". Then seemed to be flirting with me. Which was nice. Then mentioned her boyfriend a couple of times... Oh well. Still had a nice chat. She really did seem flirty though. Also a little drunk. Did get her number though and invited her to see the Christmas Market with me. No reply though. Oh well. Was hoping I'd made a friend.

Additional entertainment was that traditional sight in an Irish pub, of a drunk person being very firmly persuaded out the door by a group of burly bar staff.

Pleasant night. I think I'll miss Molly Malone.

Went to the Geekest Link quiz last night.

This month it was Ed's birthday so to celebrate, this was Star Trek themed.  Rounds based on Klingons, Jean Luc Picard,  the movie trilogy (Star Trek 2, 3, and 4), Starships (picture round), and General Nerdage.  Extra poitns for teams that came in costume.  There was an awesome team that had a Borg, a Tolosian, a Star Fleet officer, and what I think might have been a Vulcan robe.

We came 5th, which wasn't too bad.  One team got every question right (first time ever), and another dropped a single point.  Also the mystery prize round went to a tie-breaker.  Closest answer won.  What Stardate was given at the start of Star Trek 2?  The winner knew it!

These are the questions we didn't get.  Have screened comments so you can have a go yourselves, and will unscreen them in the next day or so.  If anyone gets all of them right, they are hereby invited to join my team next month.  (Downside is this is on a Sunday evening and it's usually a school night).

Comments unscreened. answers in comments

Klingons:

  1. Who played Chancellor Gowron
  2. Kor, Koloth and Kang appeared in the DS9 episode Blood Oath.  What were the original series episode that they first appeared in? (We had to name two of the episode for full points)
  3. Apart from the J J  Abrams movie, which is the only Star Trek movie not to feature a klingon on screen?
Jean Luc Picard:
  1. In TNG: Jean Luc Picard oversaw the Rite of succession and became the only non Klingon ever to receive which title?
Movie Trilogy
  1. Which phase had the Genesis program reached?
Pictures round:
  1. Which race's ship is this?

General nerdage
  1. Which regular character, except for Q has their name in most episode titles?
  2. What was the name of 7-of-9's parents ship?
  3. What was the name of the zone of space featured in Star Trek: Insurrection?
  4. Which episode of DS9 did Q appear in?

So many things I want to do, and yet seem to be completely unable to get around to it.  Those "to it"s are never quite round enough.  Here's the list.  Partly for my own convenience.

When it comes to travel, I seriously need to visit Sweden.  I do have a vague offer of a guide/couch space.  I also want to visit Brussels by Eurostar.  I could leave work at 5:00pm, and be there by just after 8:00 (well, 9:00 local time).  This is something that I really want someone to do with someone though.  A weekend involving pub crawls and sightseeing would be more fun if shared.

For single traveller stuff, I want to go to a convention.  There's Eurocon in Zagreb (at a time that would be inconvenient for work) and Worldcon in Chicago.  I have slight reservations about travelling to the US  Too many horror stories.

From a less travellish POV, I plan to host an rpg session.  Lack of tables or space at my place will cause a slight issue here.  I will fix this.

More first aid.  I did rather enjoy the course I did last year.  I don't want to get rusty.  I'm sure there's space for volunteers at LARPs.  Just need to talk to people.

Movie nights.  This may involve Pizza and Scott Pilgrim.

Also have to remember the Geekest Link pub quiz is on this Sunday.  Perhaps this time I'll persuade someone to join me.  Unlikely but could happen.

Another Science Geek Singles group meetup.  This was the British Library's science Christmas Quiz.

We had a team of 4.  One person cancelled just before, which was a bit of a shame really.  I'm sure I could have found a fifth and balanced out the gender imbalance a little given time.

Was impressed that we got complementary wine, and mince pies, and chocolate.  We pessimistically named ourselves Absolute Zero this being our expected score. The quiz itself was fun but hard.  Luckily the last round was Sci-fi based. I am enough of a space nerd to have known Gagarins space craft was Vostock but not enough to know whether it was 1 or 2.

I realised I've never been to the British Museum before.  It's a fantastic place.  Will have to go again when it's open.

It's actually been pretty hectic this weekend.

Did the cocktail party.  This involved doing the essential stuff like stage 1 of laundry, and expenses and stuff before leaving.  Had to leave fairly early.  Also had to pick up a bottle of Creme De Menthe.  aside from the detour this also meant i had to actually struggle through the horror that is Sainsbury's on a Saturday.  And was delayed further by the security device malfunctioning.

Kept forgetting odds and sods so kept wanting to return.  Driving back home took up rather more of the day than I would have liked.

Also had to squeeze in a visit to my parents' place because I'd bought a printer and had it delivered there.  They weren't answering their phones!  Old people and technology, honestly...

I was somewhat annoyed to find that it had a symbol saying it had no USB cable in the box.  Then slightly annoyed to find that it actually did have after I bought one (although the 5 metre cable I have is a lot more useful than the 1,8M one it came with).  Had to get that working...  Actually a lot less stress than the most recent HP printer I tried to install but why must *everything* run something in the system tray!?  Will have to sort something out there.

Needed to do another pile of computer stuff.  Conversion of some files, transferring from Angelus (desktop) to Chianna (netbook).  muych easier since I learned abut sync tools.

Then there was the Geekest Link at the Caroline of Brunswick.  Shame I know nothing about John Carpenter films, horror movie soundtracks, or horror video games.  And couldn't remember my Bufffy lore well enough...  We did abysmally.   Wish some other people could come to Brighton on a First Sunday Of The Month evening for a sci-fi themed pub quiz.  I know nothing of modern video games!

So...  Seem to have woken up at 6:45.  It's a convention!  I need late night geeking energy!

Actually feeling a bit head-coldy.  I'm going to have to take it fairly easy this weekend.

So I arrived, yesterday afternoon, satnav found its way through Coventry's road system which proves these things must rely entirely on dark magic.  Arrived, checked in quickly, unpacked  Disapointed that I had a twin room rather than a double but better than a single.  At least I have a spare bed that I can dump everything on rather than the hassle of unpacking.

Britannia hotel is a little tatty.  Shower head sprays water out the side.  Also have older shower attached to taps that was replaced some time ago which just gets in the way.  Do have wi0fi in room which is not officially offered but my room is in the right place.

Met friends.  Went to bar.  Would have moved but beer was good and friends were in bar.  Actually made it to a panel item - Flogging a dead horse.  Made a decent showing on the pub quiz.  Came third.  Could have come second with a little more confidence in our guesses.  Went to Starship Cool Wall.  Very contentious.  Felt batterries running out.  Dammit brain!  Why do you insist I only need 6 and a half hour's sleep each night?
