So, I read this and found it sort of amusing but can't help feeling that pTerry's books aren't quite as good as they used to be. There's been a serious decline since Monstrous Regiment.

None of the main characters really appealed. I didn't find myself caring that much for the main plot. Just wasn't epic enough. The book seemed to be largely about a football match. And the result of the football match was that there was going to be a football match. No foul creatures from the Dungeon dimensions. No risk of the end to the entire world. Not even the possibility of Ankh-Morpork being destroyed.

Is it just me?

I'm going to make a confession. I borrowed the advance copy of Unseen Academicals from work for the weekend, took it home...and didn't finish it. :S Took it back on the Monday with the vague idea I'd get round to reading the last half when the proof landed on my desk in a few months. Which is a far cry from when I was younger and I'd lurk around the library shelves, snapping up Pratchetts and devouring them in a night.

There's been a serious decline since Monstrous Regiment.

Hm. I remember reception for that one being rather mixed (though I loved it)...was decidedly underwhelmed by Making Money, however, but then I wasn't keen on Going Postal, either. :/

Some people have been mentioning the Alzheimer's in connection with the perceived decline [speaking in general: I know you didn't mention that yourself], but I feel it's more of a stylistic shift, albeit one that's proving less than universally popular. A patchy one, though, in light of the fact that I really liked Thud! and Nation.

Well, the Alzheimer Disease is probably making life difficult. I just finished Nation and I thought that it was ok.
