Or if people could realise that terrorism is really not very effective for anything other than killing a lot of people.

Brits carry on as normal. We're like that. We start mocking the terrorists. Then we start ignoring them. Yesterday's attempt ranked as slightly more important than The Ashes.

And we still don't really know what they want.

They could probably get a lot more support for their goals if they went about it in a peaceful manner.

yea, I thought it was pretty funny that although the bombings were front page, the cricket match was second page, and almost as big lettering/photos.

I agree. Some old guy in Southern Oregon told me he was reading the Koran (spelling??) for the 3rd time and it said in there, If THEY won't convert to Islam then Kill THEM.

Given that the youngest victim of the first attack was a Muslim woman who, according to her familly, had recently 'refound her faith', I'd say they have really dumb bombs.

But yeah, most interpretations of the Q'ran have a strong emphasis on not killing people (like the Bible, strangly enough). And yes, your friend in Oregon and possibly the bombers could have a less liberal version of it, but that's like judging the entirety of the Christian religion on KJV. There's also the thing that seniour Clerics in Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and a couple of other places have issued fatwa (religious edicts, a bit like a Papal Bull is for Catholics) that suicide bombing is NOT the way to martyrdom and a Very Bad Thing.

And we still don't know what they want. Problem is, I don't think they know quite what they want. The more I hear about the first bombing, the more it does sound like that Monkey Dust sketch with the megalomaniacal Al-Qaida opperative offering young, disillusioned, dispossessed young men paradise, if they just do this one little job for Allah. Your life sucks, the Enemy is making it suck, strike out at the Enemy and it will all be better. People fall for it. All nations, all creeds have fallen for that one at some point in history.
